1. This square represents the area required to generate 10% of today's total* UK energy demand using offshore wind power in the Southern North Sea.
2. This square represents the area required to generate 25% of today's total* UK energy demand using photo-voltaic power in North Africa.
* Total demand includes all energy use for electric power generation, transport, heating and all other uses by domestic and industrial users.
The areas shown allow for an overall energy conversion efficiency of 70% for the electrolysis of water and using hydrogen gas delivered by pipeline as the energy carrier.
i.e. 70% of the original electrical energy generated is available at the point of use of the hydrogen.
The area of Southern North Sea indicated is based on 5 x 2 MW wind turbines per square kilometre.
The area of North Africa indicated is based on 10% efficient PV cells covering 25% of the total area indicated.
